Amable R. Aguiluz V
Dr. Amable R Aguiluz is a Filipino entrepreneur who saw the need and demand for fully trained computer professionals in the country. He founded AMA Computer University and named it after the initials of his father’s name, Amable Mendoza Aguiluz.
Aguiluz founded the AMA Institute of Computer Studies with the first computer school located along Shaw Boulevard on October 20, 1980. At that time, AMA Institute of Computer Studies offered only short-term courses in Electronic Data Processing Fundamentals, Basic Programming, and Technology Career. Three student(s) enrolled at the AMA Institute of Computer Studies during the first semester.
AMA Computer College came into existence in June 1981. It extended its services through a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. With only a handful of students in its first year of operation, the AMACC student population rose dramatically from 600 in 1983 to 2,000 in 1985 in its first official campus in Makati City. Shortly after, it established its main campus in Quezon City. Two provincial campuses were then founded in Cebu and Davao City.
It was the first school in the country to fully integrate the Internet into its curriculum. Internet services were provided in all its campuses. Since 1987, all major AMA colleges have been interconnected through a local area network (LAN), which converted them into one nationwide school system. AMA is also the only school in the country to have successfully held a teleconference between its high school students and another high school class in Canada in 1994.
Mr. Amable R. Aguiluz, V is the Chairman and President of AMA Rural Bank of Mandaluyong, Inc. Mr. Aguiluz is also the pioneer of IT Education in the Philippines and is considered as the “Father of Computer Education.” He built the AMA Education System to a 6-billion Peso conglomerate with 200 schools and 150,000 students from its humble beginning of 13 students. He has also started conquering China, United States and Middle East. Ambassador Aguiluz has been the recipient of numerous honors which includes the Medallion of Bahrain, the President’s Medal of Merit, Canada Business Award and the Agora Award. Presently, he is also serving as the President’s Special Envoy to the Gulf Cooperation Council. Ambassador Aguiluz is a Business Administration graduate from the University of the Philippines, received his Doctorate in Business Administration from Columbia College, Missouri, U.S.A. He has also successfully completed the Top Management Program at Bali, Indonesia and Business Management Programs at Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania and the Owners and President Management Program of the Harvard University.
